The Triple Package : How Three Unlikely Traits Explain the Rise and Fall of Cultural Groups in America

Description

"That certain groups do much better in America than others--as measured by income, occupational status, test scores, and so on--is difficult to talk about. In large part this is because the topic feels racially charged. The irony is that the facts actually debunk racial stereotypes. There are black and Hispanic subgroups in the United States far outperforming many white and Asian subgroups. Moreover, there's a demonstrable arc to group success--in immigrant groups, it typically dissipates by the third generation--puncturing the notion of innate group differences and undermining the whole concept of 'model minorities.'" Mormons have recently risen to astonishing business success. Cubans in Miami climbed from poverty to prosperity in a generation. Nigerians earn doctorates at stunningly high rates. Indian and Chinese Americans have much higher incomes than other Americans; Jews may have the highest of all. Why do some groups rise? Drawing on groundbreaking original research and startling statistics, The Triple Package uncovers the secret to their success. A superiority complex, insecurity, impulse control--these are the elements of the Triple Package, the rare and potent cultural constellation that drives disproportionate group success. The Triple Package is open to anyone. America itself was once a Triple Package culture. It's been losing that edge for a long time now. Even as headlines proclaim the death of upward mobility in America, the truth is that the oldfashioned American Dream is very much alive--butsome groups have a cultural edge, which enables them to take advantage of opportunity far more than others. - Americans are taught that everyone is equal, that no group is superior to another. But remarkably, all of America's most successful groups believe (even if they don't say so aloud) that they're exceptional, chosen, superior in some way. - Americans are taught that self-esteem--feeling good about yourself--is the key to a successful life. But in all of America's most successful groups, people tend to feel insecure, inadequate, that they have to prove themselves. - America today spreads a message of immediate gratification, living for the moment. But all of America's most successful groups cultivate heightened discipline and impulse control. But the Triple Package has a dark underside too. Each of its elements carries distinctive pathologies; when taken to an extreme, they can have truly toxic effects. Should people strive for the Triple Package? Should America? Ultimately, the authors conclude that the Triple Package is a ladder that should be climbed and then kicked away, drawing on its power but breaking free from its constraints. Provocative and profound, The Triple Package will transform the way we think about success and achievement.

Michael McKeon: Theory of the Novel: A Historical Approach

Theory of the Novel: A Historical Approach

Description

Michael McKeon, author of The Origins of the English Novel, 1600-1740, here assembles a collection of influential essays on the theory of the novel. Carefully chosen selections from Frye, Benjamin, Levi-Strauss, Lukacs, Bakhtin, and other prominent theorists explore the historical significance of the novel as a genre, from its early beginnings to its modern variations in the postmodern novel and postcolonial novel. Offering a generous selection of key theoretical texts for students and scholars alike, Theory of the Novel also presents a provocative argument for studying the genre. In his introduction to the volume and in headnotes to each section, McKeon argues that genre theory and history provide the best approach to understanding the novel. All the selections in this anthology date from the twentieth century-most from the last forty years-and represent the attempts of different theorists, and different theoretical schools, to describe the historical stages of the genre's formal development.

From the fierce cold plains of Mongolia to the Korean Peninsula, Genghis's brothers, sons, and commanders have made emperors bow, slaughtering vast armies of fighting men. But as Genghis enters a strange new land of towering mountains and arid desert, he stirs an enemy greater than any he has met before. Under his command, Shah Ala-ud-Din Mohammed has thousands of fierce Arab warriors, teeming cavalry, and terrifying armored elephants. When Genghis strikes, the Arabs prove their mettle. On the verge of defeat, Genghis is forced to leave his own Theory of the Novel: A Historical Approach free ebook vast encampment, and the women and children in it, in the path of an enraged, savage enemy. This book prepares girls for what to expect from puberty and offers advice on what they can do to cope with the emotional, psychological and physical changes and stay happy and confident as they go through their early teens. It covers all the topics that girls want to find out about, including moods and feelings, periods and how to survive them, what happens to boys, diet, eating disorders, exercise, body image, sex and relationships, contraception, sexual health, self-confidence, drink and drugs, exam stress, cyberbullying, and staying safe - both out and about and online. It guides young teenagers through this exciting and sometimes daunting stage as they start taking full responsibility for many aspects of their own lives for the first time.

Neville Goddard: The Power of Awareness

The Power of Awareness

Description

With the words, "Do not try to change people; they are only messengers telling you who you are. Revalue yourself and they will confirm the change," Goddard invites us to resist the temptation toward judgment and to look at ourselves for the change we want to see in the world an in others. "God's promise is unconditional; God's law is conditional, and comes in its own good time. If you do not experience it in this life," he said, "You pass through a door, that's all that death is, and you are restored to life instantly in a world like this, and you go on there with the same problems you had here with no loss of identity."

Like every origami book, "Origami Games" shows through words and diagrams how to make origami. What makes this book unique is that it's also a game book. It offers suggestions on how to use the origami The Power of Awareness ebook pdf to play both competitive games, which allow players to test their skills against each other using scorekeeping to determine a winner, and cooperative games, which provide fun ways for players to work as a team. The book also encourages readers to come up with and document their own games using a template provided in the back of the book. This book is also unique in that the models are made from regular letter size (8 x 11- inch) paper available anywhere, unlike the square origami paper usually found only in art supply stores. For many people, the lack of easily available origami paper can be a barrier that prevents them from trying the craft. This book removes that barrier. Many children are intimidated by all but the simplest models, and require some kind of hook, beyond the model itself, to get past their initial resistance. Games are especially effective in breaking down this resistance, and in stimulating interest in origami as an art or craft.

Every Day Oracle

Description

The spirit of Madame Lenormand-the most famous cartomant--is captured in this oracle deck, inspired by traditional Italy.   Publisher Review: Tarot cards are packed with layers of imagery. You can approach a Tarot card from so many angles: traditional meaning, astrological, elemental, or numeric correspondences, symbolic interpretation, intuitive messages, etc. In fact, although we all love the depth and empowerment that we get from our Tarot decks, let’s admit it—sometimes we just want an easy answer, an old-school fortune-telling. If you, like me, get this occasional craving, it is good to have an oracle deck on hand. Although I like to sometimes play with oracles in general, I find that there is nothing like a historic oracle (such as a Lenormand or Sibilla) for clear, quick answers. The Every Day Oracle is, according to the booklet, an authentic...read more.

Simon Morley: The Sublime

The Sublime

Description

In a world where technology, spectacle and excess seem to eclipse former concepts of nature, the individual and society, what might be the characteristics of a contemporary sublime? If there is any consensus it is in the notion that the sublime represents a taking to the limits, to the point at which fixities begin to fragment. This anthology examines how ideas of the sublime are explored in the work of contemporary artists and theorists, in relation to the unpresentable, transcendence, terror, nature, technology, the uncanny and altered states. Artists surveyed include Marina Abramovic, Joseph Beuys, Tacita Dean, Walter De Maria, A K Dolven, Olafur Eliasson, Andreas Gursky, Jitka Hanzlova, Gary Hill, Susan Hiller, Shirazeh Houshiary, Anish Kapoor, Mike Kelley, Anselm Kiefer, Yves Klein, Richard Long, Barnett Newman, Tony Oursler, Cornelia Parker, Gerhard Richter, Doris Salcedo, Lorna Simpson, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Fred Tomaselli, James Turrell, Luc Tuymans, Bill Viola and Zhang Huan. Writers include Marco Belpoliti, John Berger, Paul Crowther, Jacques Derrida, Okwui Enwezor, Jean Fisher, Barbara Claire Freeman, Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe, Doreet LeVitte-Harten, Eleanor Heartney, Lynn M.Herbert, Luce Irigaray, Fredric Jameson, Lee Joon, Julia Kristeva, Jean-Francois Lyotard, Thomas McEvilley, Vijay Mishra, David Morgan, Jean-Luc Nancy, Jacques Ranciere, Gene Ray, Robert Rosenblum, Philip Shaw, Marina Warner, Thomas Weiskel and Slavoj A iA ek.

The poor woodcutter's son is sent on a mission to the dark forest to pluck three feathers from the dragon's back. Only then can he marry Beth, the rich innkeeper's beautiful daughter. Along the way, he meets several people in need of his help. But will his kindness and bravery be enough to protect him from the angry dragon? This well-known tale is vividly brought to life by the wonderful, detailed illustrations of Olga Dugina and Iza's Ballad free download pdf Andrei Dugin. Joshua is a troubled boy who lives with his mother and stepfather in a divided city, where a wall and soldiers separate two communities, and the rubble-strewn residue of their broken world gives hints of the old life before the wall was built. Joshua discovers a manhole, which leads to a tunnel, which leads in pitch darkness under the wall and across to the other side. Forbidden territory, dangerous territory, violent territory, which a boy like him - visibly different - shouldn't stray into. An act of kindness from a girl saves his life, but leads to a brutal act of cruelty and a terrible debt he's determined to repay. And no one, no one must find out that he's been there - or the consequences will be unbearable.

The Long Mars

Ever the maverick, he is planning a fantastic voyage of his own across the Long Mars. Marina Warner: Fly Away Home: Stories

Fly Away Home: Stories

Description

Long-listed for the 2016 Edge Hill Short Story Prize Fly Away Home is Marina Warner's third - and eagerly-awaited - collection of short stories. Inspired by fairy tales, legends, and mythology, this timeless selection explores the themes of love and war - in families, and between generations. In 'Melusine' a gorgeous mermaid encounters disaster in love and visits her aunt, Morgan le Fay, to pour out her woes; in 'Breadcrumbs' a hospital patient overhears a night nurse recounting an extraordinary tale of family torn apart under terrifying circumstances. 'Out of the Burning House' introduces an elderly actor recalling an unusual case of heartbreak at the hands of a TV personality; in 'The Difference in the Dose' a young mother becomes increasingly anxious about the rift between herself and her adoptive mother. And in 'Letter to an Unknown Soldier' a thirteen year-old girl writes a heartrending second letter to an older brother away at war, having had no reply to her first...Like her award-winning novels, Marina Warner's stories conjure up mysteries and wonders in a physical world, treading a delicate, magical line between the natural and the supernatural, between openness and fear. An elegant mix of the poignant, the caustic, and the bizarre, Fly Away Home will be treasured by fans and new readers alike.

In the first months of 1944 Nevart kills herself, and simultaneously Hagop informs Edith and Jim they must leave, that they are no longer protected from the secret police. George R R Martin: A Game of Thrones

A Game of Thrones

Description

For the first time, all five novels in the epic fantasy series that inspired HBO s "Game of Thrones "are together in one boxed set. An immersive entertainment experience unlike any other, A Song of Ice and Fire has earned George R. R. Martin dubbed the American Tolkien by "Time" magazine international acclaim and millions of loyal readers. Now here is the entire monumental cycle: A GAME OF THRONES A CLASH OF KINGS A STORM OF SWORDS A FEAST FOR CROWS A DANCE WITH DRAGONS One of the best series in the history of fantasy. "Los Angeles Times" "" Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms. Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys. "" Long live George Martin . . . a literary dervish, enthralled by complicated characters and vivid language, and bursting with the wild vision of the very best tale tellers. " The New York Times""

Sianne Ngai: Ugly Feelings

Ugly Feelings

Description

Envy, irritation, paranoia - in contrast to powerful and dynamic negative emotions like anger, these non-cathartic states of feeling are associated with situations in which action is blocked or suspended. In her examination of the cultural forms to which these affects give rise, Sianne Ngai suggests that these minor and more politically ambiguous feelings become all the more suited for diagnosing the character of late modernity. Along with her inquiry into the aesthetics of unprestigious negative affects such as irritation, envy, and disgust, Ngai examines a racialised affect called "animatedness", and a paradoxical synthesis of shock and boredom called "stuplimity". She explores the politically equivocal work of these affective concepts in the cultural contexts where they seem most at stake, from academic feminist debates to the Harlem Renaissance, from late-20th Century American poetry to Hollywood film and network television. Through readings of Herman Melville, Nella Larsen, Sigmund Freud, Alfred Hitchcock, Gertrude Stein, Ralph Ellison, John Yau, and Bruce Andrews, among others, Ngai shows how art turns to ugly feelings as a site for interrogating its own suspended agency in the affirmative culture of a market society, where art is tolerated as essentially unthreatening.
